Lining Paste

Nancy Birtwhistle won the Great British Bake-Off in 2014 and that particular season is still one of my favorites. Not only is Nancy a good baker, she is so wonderful at simplifying recipes and just making bakes more approachable.  In addition to her favorite recipes, Nancy's website also includes tips for practical household tasks. In my continued efforts to battle the dreaded bundt pan, I feel compelled to try her tried and true method for nonstick baking. Check her out here: https://www.nancybirtwhistle.co.uk/

Today's cast--just three ingredients!

100g. of flour is mixed with 100g. of vegetable shortening. I didn't replace my hand mixer after our house fire and I didn't feel like hauling out the Kitchen Aid for this. The Dutch whisk worked just fine.

Once the flour and shortening were nice and smooth, I measured out the vegetable oil.

Even though my measuring cup has markings for ml, I decided to weigh it out and see if there was a discrepancy. There was. Quite a bit, really. This is why the British don't understand America's tendency to use "cups" rather than weighing things out on a scale.

I drizzled the oil into the mixture and incorporated it well.

The consistency was similar to a loose cake batter.

I poured it into a mason jar, labeled the lid with the date, and popped it into the fridge. Later that day, I tried it out for a bundt pan recipe (see the Easy Apple Coffee Cake coming up next). Let's just say, "plop!" 😁
